Wanting a little more of a challenge and less-traveled option with only a weekend to explore Scotland’s Highlands, we chose the Carn Mor Dearg Arete (also known as the CMD Arete), which allows hikers to tag two Munros in one loop. Whilst lovely to look at, it was certainly more challenging conditions than if there had been firm snow. The route is strongly recommended against during strong winds.

Hi, Just wondering if anyone has had any experience of doing the CMD arete in winter, all the way up to the summit of Ben Nevis. Could anyone advise how tricky this particular route is during winter conditions?

The middle section of the ridge starts to feel a little more serious. The final 200m ascent to the summit plateau of Ben Nevis feels like a tiring slog after the excitement of the ridge. You’ll need to be hill fit, or you’ll be stopping with calf burn every 5 minutes. The ridge from the summit starts broad and smooth but quickly flattens to become the narrow rocky arête that it is famous for. There were always axe placements to be found when I needed one. Obviously we'd be kitted with ice axes and crampons and we have had some experience with Cairngorm winter conditions. Ben Nevis via CMD arête Guided rock-scrambling day on 'Ledge Route' and Carn Mor Dearg arête Above Fort William mighty Ben Nevis dominates the view. A slight haze hung over the view towards Glen Coe and the Southern Highlands, whilst a broken cloud inversion covered Fort William and the Great Glen.It had been quite a long, involved descent to the lowest point of the areté at 1058 metres.
