Set after the aids crisis, the piece asks the question “What is it like to be a young gay man in New York the generation after the Aids Crisis?”.The show is based on E.M. Forster’s novel “Howard’s End”, a book and film which to this point I still have yet to read, I don’t believe prior knowledge of this novel is required to enjoy the show to its fullest.The cast are ridiculously talented and play multiple characters, they are all fantastic but notable cast members include Andrew Burnap as Toby Darling/Young Man 10, Samuel H. Levine as Adam/Leo/Young Man 1, Paul Hilton as Morgan/Walter and last but certainly not least Kyle Soller as Eric Glass/Young Man 9.Vanessa Redgrave’s character “Margaret” doesn’t appear until around 5 and a half hours into this epic but her impact on the piece is note-worthy.Set Design by Bob Crowley is simplistic but utterly beautiful in the right places, the lack of set really allows the individual character performance to shine, this isn’t a show that relies on huge fabulous set design to surprise audiences, that is purely down to Matthew Lopez’s utterly poignant and clever writing. One may as well begin with Forster, E.M. to state the obvious, called Morgan in Matthew Lopez’ The Inheritance, directed by Stephen Daldry, an ambitious, often powerful two-part epic of gay h… The show makes you laugh, cry and even cringe at points (Imagine a fully clothed but narrated gay sex scene about 20 minutes into the piece, utterly ridiculous but fascinating to watch).There is always a danger that with two part plays, the second half is not nearly as fantastic as the first half but I can safety safe Part Two was just as good if not better then the first.It is without a doubt the Angels In America of the new generation and is a much needed, important play for today. Lopez shifts tone, becoming almost painfully earnest, and peppering the script with heavy, preachy pronouncements about the responsibilities gay men owe each other.
