She will not make this or any book into something too inaccessible or intellectual, but she was smart as can be and creative. These books affected me much more than most of the scifi I have read, and for some reason made me think of Lord of the Flies - a look at human nature and how people could act under certain circumstances. I have read a lot of fiction, sci fiction with new ideas but I really appreciate how Octavia Butler can present but subtle and blunt in the same breath. There were no zombies or virus induced mutations. .
