This slender volume collecting two of her lesser known stories appeared on Netgalley and seemed like a perfect sampler size. When I saw that a new collection of her stories was coming out, I almost cried I was so happy.“Unexpected Stories” derives it’s title from the fact that these stories were unexpected treats found after Butler’s death. T'Gatoi's sister had given us two sterile eggs. Be the first to ask a question about Unexpected Stories.Welcome back. OCTAVIA E. BUTLER was a renowned African American author who received a MacArthur “Genius” Grant and PEN West Lifetime Achievement Award for her body of work.
by Open Road.Until this summer, Lindsay Ellis was mainly known as a super smart and witty film critic and YouTube essayist, making videos that range from...Two never-before-published stories from the archives of one of science fiction’s all-time masters. To see what your friends thought of this book,It's Octavia Butler sounding very Octavia Butler-esque. Chapter One: Bloodchild. I have heard nothing but good things of this author so I will be checking out her other works for sure.Secretly 4,5 stars, just because her later works are even better and there needs to be some distinction to validate this. The late Octavia Butler wrote brilliant, challenging science fiction along more or less the same lines as Ursula Le Guin: the speculations are often anthropological, and she's fascinated by how people interact. But, I so enjoyed them, especially the first story. The word “stories,” however feels like a bit of a misnomer, particularly if you were led to believe it was a short story anthology.
My last night of childhood began with a visit home. It's subversive and human and fantastical all at once.Octavia Estelle Butler was an American science fiction writer, one of the best-known among the few African-American women in the field. So of course I’ve heard of Octavia Butler and of course I’ve been meaning to check out her work. On one level, it’s a love story between two very different beings. On another, it’s a coming-of-age story in which a boy must absorb disturbing information and use it to make a decision that will affect the rest of his life. The idea that I would never get a new book from her was maddening. Her ideas are so vast they can easily translate into multiple books. Alas, size aside it might not have been the best introduction. That in itself warrants five stars.
There are only two short stories in this collection but I was initially surprised to find that “Unexpected Stories” was one of the first things she ever submitted for publication. And they want her back.I don't always enjoy reading Butler's work - actually, I usually DON'T like her books - but I love the way they make me think and challenge me to look at things in a new way, and I never feel like I've wasted my time.I read this with such bittersweet feelings. Her latter work is complex, engaging, and well-written - I would even go so far as to call some of them masterpieces.
I wasn't sure what Unexpected Stories would be, but my general theory is that if it's Butler, I'm in.What a joy to find this small collection from an author untimely ripped from us. Bloodchild is an amazing short story that illustrates, as beautiful allegory, the parasitic nature of both settler colonialism as well as slave societies, without being overtly political Octavia Butler has stated overtly that this is not a story about slavery but is a love story; however, this is my experience as a reader, prior to that knowledge.
An opera by Toshi Reagon based on Butler’s novel PARABLE OF THE SOWER was part of The Public Theatre “Under the Radar” festival and toured worldwide in 2018. Having LeVar Burton narrate this one with the additional sound design was wonderful. Thanks Netgalley. This is some of the great Octavia Butler's very early work, and is reminiscent of the quality of writing in her Patternmaster series. Amazon Studios and JuVee Productions (Viola Davis and Julius Tennon’s production company) are developing a drama series from Butler’s PATTERNIST series, beginning with WILD SEED, and the series is being co-written by Nnedi Okorafor and Wanuri Kahiu, who will also direct.2018, Eisner Award for Best Adaptation from Another Medium -,2012, Solstice Award, Science Fiction & Fantasy Writers of America,2010, Inductee Science Fiction Hall of Fame,2000, PEN American Center Lifetime Achievement Award in Writing,1999, Nebula Award for Best Novel – Parable of the Talents,1995, MacArthur Foundation “Genius” Grant,1985, Hugo Award for Best Novelette – Bloodchild,1985, Locus Award for Best Novelette – Bloodchild,1985, Science Fiction Chronicle Award for Best Novelette – Bloodchild,1984, Hugo Award for Best Short Story – Speech Sounds,1984, Nebula Award for Best Novelette – Bloodchild.
I read one of her Xenogenesis novels years ago, and have to admit that I haven't read anything else by her since (up until this volume), because I found it the kind of powerful, disturbing book that I can only read occasionally. In my opinion, this story was too much of an origin story and greatly lacking in a proper ending. That said, the only way you become a better writer is by actually writing, so these earlier works are comparatively not as good, interesting, or fully-developed. “Speech Sounds” is a 1983 science fiction short story by Octavia E. Butler, and was the winner of a 1984 Hugo Award.
My first taste of Octavia Butler, and it didn't disappoint. They have all of the creativity and ingenuity I have come to know in all of Butler’s work.
