The ground is the 14th largest football stadium in the whole of England, as well as the fourth-largest outside of the Premier League with a massive 37,890 all-seated capacity.The record attendance of 57,892 was set back in 1967 during an FA Cup Fifth Round replay against Sunderland, and a modern record stands at just over 40,000 for a Premiership match against Newcastle United in 2001.In October 1904, a new football club, Leeds City, came to an agreement to rent the ground for their upcoming season in the Football League. In the early hours of Tuesday 18 September 1956, a fire gutted the West Stand and scorched large sections of the pitch. The entire structure – including offices, the press box and club records – was consumed by the blaze. Boxes may look bad but they make more money than the seats so a necessary evil. The West Stand - The West Stand is also known as The John Charles West Stand, named in the honour of the former player in 2004. Elland Road is dominated by the East Stand on one side of the stadium.

The East Stand is a two-tiered stand which has a large lower tier of seating with a smaller tier above. In 1956, a fire burned down the West Stand, and a new stand had to be built.
